The late Sir Tang Shiu Kin donated half of the cost of the hospital because it was named after Sir Tang. In 1994, the hospital became the first emergency training center for medical staff in Hong Kong. In order to further improve efficiency and use medical resources more effectively, the management of Tang Shiu Kin Hospital and Ruttonjee Hospital was merged in 1998. Since 2002, the hospital's emergency department and some departments have been moved to Ruttonjee Hospital. The hospital started its reconstruction project in 2005 to provide day-time community care services and promote various community medical services through cooperation with various non-governmental organizations.
