On May 26, 2000, the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University, and Wuhan Urban Construction College merged to form Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Huazhong University of Science and Technology is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education. It is one of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project" construction universities, and it is also the first batch of "Double First Class" construction universities. The predecessor of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology was Huazhong Institute of Technology. In order to meet the urgent need for professional talents in the country's economic construction, in November 1952, the Central South Military and Political Committee decided to establish Huazhong Institute of Technology in Wuhan in accordance with the central government's instructions on the adjustment of colleges and departments nationwide. Huazhong Institute of Technology gathers all the mechanical departments of Wuhan University, Hunan University, Guangxi University, and Nanchang University and the electric power part of the electrical engineering department, the power part of the mechanical engineering department and the electric power part of the electrical engineering department of the South China Institute of Technology, as well as some basic course teachers from these institutions And equipment, as the foundation for the establishment of the school, opens the way to build a multidisciplinary industrial university from a high starting point. In October 1960, Huazhong Institute of Technology was approved as a key national institution of higher learning. In January 1988, the State Education Commission approved the Huazhong Institute of Technology to be renamed "Huazhong University of Science and Technology". The original Tongji Medical University originated from the German Medical School founded by German Ehrlich Paulon in Shanghai in 1907. In 1908, it was renamed Tongji German Medical School. In 1927, it was renamed the National Tongji University School of Medicine. Considering the large population in the central region and the backward medical treatment conditions, in February 1950, the central government made the decision to move the Tongji University School of Medicine and its affiliated hospital to Wuhan as a whole. In September 1951, the Tongji University School of Medicine moved to Wuhan and merged with the Wuhan University School of Medicine to form the Central South Tongji Medical College. In August 1955, it was renamed Wuhan Medical College. In July 1985, it was renamed Tongji Medical University, and the school gradually developed from a single medical school to a comprehensive medical university. The predecessor of the original Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction was Zhongnan Construction Engineering School. At the beginning of the founding of New China, there was an urgent need for a large number of urban construction professionals. In August 1952, the Central South Military and Political Committee decided to select the site of Wuchang Mafangshan based on the civil engineering majors of six engineering schools in Central South, and merge to form the Central South Construction Engineering School. In January 1960, the school was renamed Wuhan Urban Construction College, which was the first urban construction college in New China. After the changes of the times, as the understanding of the meaning of urban construction returned to rationality, in 1981, the State Urban Construction Administration decided to build a new site and set up Wuhan Urban Construction College. The original three schools of Huazhong University of Science and Technology have not only inherited the excellent school-running traditions of a century-old school, but also embodied the red gene that shares the fate with the new China and resonates at the same frequency with the Republic. They have undergone two major adjustments in the Chinese higher education front. The two major developments of China's higher education cause have been hailed as "the epitome of the development of higher education in New China."
